What It Is

The thing about love is

that it's weird. It's a weird thing, love.

Everybody knows

you can't be in it forever, not the way

the first months go, not with

all that heat and intensity and

how you just HAVE to be with someone

and nothing is any good until you are, and then,

then, it gets quieter, and you settle in some,

and start mulling over the irritants,

and maybe you can live with them,

and maybe you can't. That's how it goes.

And sometimes you only remember the good stuff

when you're away from him, like how Thanksgiving

tastes better in memory, like how

the photo albums are better than the trip.

But then sometimes he will turn just so,

or put his reading glasses on, or kiss his kids

goodnight, and then, then it all slips

back into place.
